Trolvo Toyota 1JZ-powered Volvo 240 part five – Carnage episode 38

The 1JZ-swapped Swede comes to life! Well, sort of

IT’S BEEN a long road so far for the Trolvo. Our 1JZ-swapped Volvo brick has fought Scotty and the Carnage gang every step of the way over the past several months.

Bought as a half-finished project, it has so far taken three episodes to even consider getting the beast running. Between rusty fuel tanks, jumbled wiring and half-cut firewalls, there has been a lot to contend with.

Now, with the Swedish meatball closer to life than ever, Scotty saw fit to hook up the Haltech-supplied ECU, along with knocking over a few other odd jobs.

As covered in our last video on the Trolvo, control duties are being taken care of by an Elite 2000 ECU and pre-terminated harness. In comparison to the rest of the twin-turbo missile’s woes, hooking up and tuning this set-up has proven relatively breezy.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Carnage without smoke coming out of something, this time the starter motor. Thankfully, our mates down the road at Maxx Performance were able to sort out a new, significantly less crispy unit.

With the plugs and igniter box removed, it was time to get the bubbling crude flowing. After a few tense moments running on the starter, the donk’s oil pressure came good, much to Scotty’s relief. Some judicious map adjustment later, the mighty Japanese six came to life.

There’s more to be done, though, before the Trolvo moves more than a few feet. With a new fuel tank taking its sweet time to arrive from the States and a non-responsive dash, Scotty and Kian still have some work ahead of them. Stay tuned to see it all unfold on a future instalment of Carnage!
