INTERNET drifting sensation Ken Block has gone and done it again! This time he’s ditched Gymkhana for Climbkhana, as he tackles the infamous Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado.

The Pikes Peak International Hillclimb is one of the oldest races in America, and its 156 turns, massive unguarded drops and 5000-foot elevation change make it one of the most dangerous in the world. It’s claimed plenty of lives, but every year we see insane machinery built for the single purpose of getting from the startline to the summit in record time. The current record of 8:13.8 was set in 2013 by Sebastien Loeb in a purpose-built 875hp, 875kg Peugeot race car with some of the wildest aerodynamic features you’ve ever seen.

Ken Block wasn’t exactly concerned with shattering records when he tackled Pikes Peak in his Hoonicorn Mustang RTR V2 – a twin-turbo version of the all-wheel-drive ’65 Mustang he used in a previous Gymkhana viral video. Rather, as you would expect, Ken was keen to shred as many tyres as possible on his way to the summit.

Being 14,000ft above sea level, you need a lot of horsepower. As the air is thinner at high altitudes, it’s harder to make grunt, especially with an aspirated engine. So Ken and his team at Ford Performance equipped the existing 410-cube Roush Yates race motor with a pair of Garrett turbos and switched to methanol fuel. The result was 1400hp – plenty to bake all four tyres.

With that sorted, all that was left to do was let her eat! Check out the video as Ken Block hangs on the edge of insanity, skating the twin-turbo Mustang past giant unguarded drops on the way to the Pikes Peak Summit some 14,000 feet above sea level. It’s a great watch, and look out for the tribute to legendary Finnish rally driver Ari Vatanen. Wonder what Ken would make of our twin-turbo V8-powered Mazda MX-5?
