Muscle lives: Chev Camaro is set for a comeback!

Fresh news out of the US suggests the Chevy Camaro may return

The sixth generation of Chevrolet’s Camaro ended production in 2024, with no successor to take the nameplate forward. Now, fresh news out of the US suggests it might be about to make a comeback.

According to US news outlet GM Authority, a seventh-generation Camaro has already been green-lit internally within GM, and may come to fruition as early as late 2027.

The report suggests the new Camaro will be built on the rear-wheel-drive Alpha 2 platform at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan, where the current Cadillac CT4 and CT5 models are assembled.

Given it will allegedly be based on that Alpha 2 platform, it all but secures the new Camaro as being rear-wheel drive. However, it’s unclear whether it’ll be a two- or four-door machine (or both), or if it will be powered by an internal combustion engine or an electric motor (or a blend of the two).

There were rumours when the sixth-gen Camaro ended production that it may come back as a four-door EV, and other outlets are suggesting GM may even use the nameplate to make a crossover SUV EV rival to the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

However, as both the current Alpha 2 cars – the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 – are ICE, rear-wheel-drive sedans, it seems likely the new Camaro will follow the same formula. GM Authority says a Buick sedan will also be built on the same platform at GM’s Michigan plant in the near future.

So, what does this mean for the Australian market? The sixth-gen Camaro entered the Aussie market in mid-2018, converted locally to RHD in Melbourne by Walkinshaw. The exercise saw slow sales and only lasted just over 18 months, before what would become GMSV ended Camaro importing and conversions to focus on the Silverado truck range.

In the Supercars championship, the sixth-gen Camaro still runs against the S650 Ford Mustang and the recently debuted, V8-powered A90 Toyota Supra. A new Supra road car is in the works, so that will hopefully make it to the track in Supercars soon. It does beg the question if GMSV will bring the seventh-gen Camaro to Aussie shores, both in road car form and to continue the fight in the Supercars Championship.
