What’s new for the 30th go-round of Australia’s biggest horsepower party


THE 30th anniversary edition of Street Machine Summernats is set to be a doozy. Here’s a taste of what to expect when the ’Nats takes over Exhibition Park, Canberra, 5-8 January 2017.

Ford Fairlane Coupe Summernats CruiseThe Thursday City Cruise is bigger and better than ever, with 300 streeters treating the citizens of Canberra to a taste of the ’Nats as they cruise down Northbourne Avenue.

Ford XY Falcon GT BurnoutThe Last Chance Wildcard Burnouts are also bigger than ever, with a stellar line-up of burnout legends (including Chris Christou and Mark Yardy) taking on the young ’uns – and five serious entries from New Zealand.

Holden LJ Torana Coupe SummernatsWith over 2000 cars entered, getting them all into the venue is going to be a task. Therefore, cars that drive to Canberra under their own steam will be scrutineered at the racecourse off Randwick Road. Cars on trailers will go through the usual scrutineering shed inside Exhibition Park.

FC Holden FitzyTo celebrate the rich heritage of the event, the ’Nats team is assembling a group of former Grand Champion winners and other historic cars that will be displayed in the Meguiar’s Show Car Pavilion. These will include Rob Beauchamp’s VL Calais, Fitzy’s FC, Zoltan Bodo’s Senator and Glenn Munday’s HQ SS – the first car to turn a tyre on the Summernats pad.

Plymouth Barracuda King Kong CudaIn past years, the Top 60 cars have been cleared out of the hall on Saturday night to make way for the Sound Off. The Sound Off will now happen in the scrutineering sheds on both Saturday and Sunday, so the Top 60 will be on show right through until 3pm Sunday. Great stuff!

Summernats Grand Champion Mazda RX3The Grand Champion procedure has also had a tweak. Instead of putting the contenders through their paces in a grass motorkhana on Saturday night, the driving events will now consist of a slalom and go-to-whoa on Sunday morning at around 11am. The top three finishers will then front the burnout pad at 12.30pm to learn who has won the famous sword.

Farmtruck AZN Street Outlaws NwThere are some great international guests at this year’s event, including Farmtruck, AZN and Dominator from Street Outlaws, and master painter Charley Hutton.

HQ One Tonner Blown LOOSEQStreet Machine Summernats 30 will see the 10th and final person inducted into the Rare Spares Legend Hall Of Fame, which happens Saturday night before the Supercruise.
