IF SOME is good, more is better? When it comes to fun times in your street machine, you betcha! Which is why I’m pleased to announce that Street Machine Drag Challenge Weekend is coming to Queensland, 13-15 April. Don’t worry, the new event doesn’t replace the main, five-day Drag Challenge – that will be going ahead down south in November as usual.
The idea of Drag Challenge Weekend is to give Queensland racers a taste of the event – seeing how our usual stomping grounds can be a big haul for those ‘up north’. Plus, if the event goes off, we’ll look at taking the full extravaganza up to Godzone in the future.
The main difference between the two events is that Drag Challenge Weekend happens over just Friday, Saturday and Sunday – three days of racing and over 400km of road driving in between the tracks. We’ll start at Willowbank on 13 April, then take the scenic route to Warwick Dragway, where we’ll race on Saturday. Then we’ll head back to Willowbank for the final day’s racing on the Sunday – again by the road less travelled.
The whole point of the exercise is to put your street car to the test and have a whole bunch of fun with your mates and other likeminded folk at the same time. The heads-up classes remain the same – Outlaw Blown and Aspirated for cars running slicks or radials bigger that 275, and Radial Blown and Aspirated for cars shod with street radials 275 or smaller. Plus there is a Dial-Your-Own class for those wanting to race handicap-style, and a bunch of other trophies for Quickest Six, Quickest Four and so on.
The rules and regulations are identical to the big show, meaning that once you arrive at Willowbank on the Friday for scrutineering and registration, your car can’t see the back of a tilt-tray or trailer until the weekend is over – you’ll need to do those 400 clicks entirely under your own steam. You’ll also have to carry everything you need for the weekend – including your tools, spares and crew – in your car and/or small trailer.
We’ll have our online entry mechanism up soon, but in the meantime if you want to enter the event, email us with photos and info on your car, plus your contact details to [email protected], to get on the Drag Challenge Weekend mailing list. The ET cut off for entrants is 12.99-seconds, so if your car is quicker than a 12.99-seconds over the quarter-mile you’re eligible for the competition. As soon as info and entry details are available, you’ll get ’em!
