WARWICK is a beaut little Aussie town, located 130km south-west of Brisbane. But what makes it really special is that it is home to one of my favourite drag strips in Australia – Warwick Dragway.
It may only be an eighth-mile track, but Warwick is an excellent facility that is staffed by a very dedicated crew who go out of their way to make racers old and new feel welcome.
So I was stoked when we clinched the deal to include Warwick in our Street Machine Drag Weekend program. The only problem was distance. Unlike most tracks in Queensland, Warwick is only an hour or so down the road from Willowbank. And one of the critical parts of Drag Challenge is that the road course between the tracks should be challenging!
To get around this, event director Scott Taylor came up with a couple of scenic routes to and from Warwick to allow the entrants to stretch their legs, visiting Maroon Dam on Friday and skirting Toowoomba this afternoon.
The day’s racing was excellent, marred only by a prang that saw Brad Lane’s stunning twin-turbo Torana make contact with the wall. Our hearts go out to you, Brad.
