It’s something we’ve all dreamed of as kids: getting the opportunity to fang a car around Australia’s greatest race track, Mount Panorama, Bathurst.

Our resident cameraman Matty Hull recently got to live that dream when he was given the opportunity to race his budget Hyundai Excel circuit car in a support race for the Bathurst 6 Hour.

While some may snort at the prospect of an Excel racer, the one-make series has taken up the mantle from the once super-popular HQ Holden series as the budget way into circuit racing. Race-ready cars can be built for as little as $15,000, and if you’re handy like our young Matt, odds are you can do the bulk of it yourself.

You can find a detailed build series on the car and previous events he has tackled on his YouTube channel, The Nugget Project. For this episode of Carnage, we thought it’d be cool to get Matt in front of the camera and take us for a ride at his very first crack at the mountain.

If the prospect of taking on Mount Panorama with 62 other entrants wasn’t enough, Matty also had to endure wet conditions, a swathe of red and yellow flag situations, and plenty of other action during the weekend.

So kick back, grab your favourite beverage and enjoy this special episode of Carnage, where we break the norm in the name of budget racing fun!
