BURNOUTS and fires go together like ham and cheese, and Ben Simpson’s little yellow Datsun 1200 looks a lot like a block of cheese (hence the number plates) so that kind of works. Fortunately the little LS-powered Datto didn’t melt like cheese when it caught fire at Tread Cemetery recently.
It did, however, set fire to some of the signage along the wall, and shows why signs at burnout comps shouldn’t be made out of flammable materials.
Of course, this isn’t Ben’s main ride. He’s best known for his insane blown alcohol Datsun SCUD, but while that’s getting its alloy block repaired Ben decided to have a bit of fun. “My spare parts car was just sitting there doing nothing and someone said: ‘Why don’t you slap an LS in it?’ So that got out of hand,” he says. “It’s a fairly stock LS with an Alkydigger direct-port methanol injection system.”
The rest of the driveline is a TH350 with a 4000rpm converter and a cut-down nine-inch diff.
Stay tuned for plenty more awesome footage from Tread Cemetery 2015.
