Red CentreNATS is firing up for another massive year and organisers are calling on local volunteers to help power Australia’s ultimate celebration of street machines, horsepower and car culture.
Held in Alice Springs every Father’s Day weekend, Red CentreNATS brings together more than 800 entrants and thousands of spectators from across the country for three days of burnouts, drags, cruising and car displays.
Behind the scenes, it’s local legends who keep the wheels turning by helping with everything from fire safety to pad clearing, crowd support and coordination. One of those volunteers is Ian Smith, who has been part of Red CentreNATS since day one.
Ian is the Fire Chief and leads a team responsible for managing fire safety across the entire precinct, including the high-octane action on the burnout pad.
“For the past three years, I’ve taken on the Fire Chief role,” Ian said.
“I coordinate the fire teams, appoint leaders, help manage the safety plans and assist with everything from vehicle incidents to the big burnout finales.”
Ian began volunteering with the SES in 1996 and later got involved in motorsport fire safety before bringing his skills to local events in Alice Springs.
He’s been involved in motorsport for nearly three decades and still gets just as excited each year when Red CentreNATS rolls around.
“Last year, I spent around 50 to 60 hours in a fire suit between Wednesday and Sunday,” he said.
“It’s on the extreme side and not everyone does that many hours, but being right in the thick of it is what makes it so special.”

Ian says volunteering offers an experience like no other.
“You don’t need experience, just common sense and a willingness to learn,” he said.
“We’ll pair you with a senior team member and show you the ropes. You’ll be learning on the job, up close to the action and part of a team that genuinely loves motorsport.”
His wife began volunteering by dropping off food and water to the crew. Now, she’s hands-on during the entire weekend, helping keep the fire team running.
“There’s always something for everyone. From cleaning up the burnout pad to helping the fire crew take a break, every job is important,” Ian said.
Red CentreNATS isn’t the only event that relies on dedicated volunteers.
A healthy volunteer base is essential for the future of motorsport in Alice Springs, with events like Speedway meets, the Tatts Finke Desert Race and the Alice Springs Inland Dragway all depending on people willing to give their time.
“We’ve got about 12 active local volunteers in our crew at the moment. For the big events, some even fly in from interstate just to be here,” Ian said.

“That shows how much people value this event and what it means to be part of something bigger than yourself.
“Volunteering is my way of giving back to the community. I’ve done it my whole adult life. If you love motorsport and want to support it, this is the best way to do it.”
