Street Machine Drag Challenge presented by VPW Australia kicks off 27 October at Victorian Motorsport Park. Much of the 300+ strong field are flat out preparing – or in some cases – building their cars for the event. Nevertheless, when the opportunity came up for us to represent Drag Challenge at Killer Cars Melbourne’s annaul Grand Final Eve event, we couldn’t say no.
The centrepiece of the Drag Challenge display was reigning champ Brandon Zito and his now 7.1-second twin-turbo LC Torana.
Flanking Brandon was his mate Anthony Fortunato’s now RB-powered LC Torana on one side, and DC veteran Rob Giangrave’s new Godzilla-powered Ford Landau on the other.
We were also stoked to have Brendan Cherry’s stunning new Camaro on show, as well as the Hackshop Garage XE, Jack Cutajar’s NASTYE, Vince Stigliano’s brutal ’70 Mustang and Zak Liakis’s VH Commo. What a crew!
Brendan Cherry’s K1LA68 has been a labour of love for a couple of years now, matching stunning looks with a monster twin-turbo Kanaris Race Engines LS set up making well north of 2000hp at the hubs!
The next issue of Street Machine features a very special car from Fekete Fabrications, but for now dig the patina stylings of the ’69 Camaro they debuted at Killer Cars.
The show brought out some stunning SM feature cars, including Dean Rickard’s SMOTY-nominated HT Monaro, Tony Marakis’s ‘Green Lantern’ XY (featured in the current mag), Rhys Christou’s XR and the Guljas boy’s BLWNPRM.
Trophies at the show are restricted to a simple top three. We loved Justin Zammit’s Torana when it was unveiled at MotorEx earlier this year, but man it was cool to see it out in the sun.
