Silent Thunder (1992) - ripper car movies

Truckie Claude Sams (Stacy Keach) has a wedding day to forget after he has a major fallout with his best man and 18-year-old son, Paul, who later that night is killed in a hit-and-run. The only clue to the crime comes from the lone witness, Paul’s mate Johnny (Matthew Hotsinpiller), who describes the offending vehicle as “a dirty, yellow 18-wheeler with four running lights”.

Fuelled by grief, guilt and anger, along with dissatisfaction at the pathetic police response, Claude makes it his mission to bring the offender to justice. Supported by his new missus, Vi (Lisa Banes), and a team of friends, he hits the highways in his Peterbilt, handing out leaflets and offering a reward for information.

Meanwhile, the cops have started intercepting trucks in a search for suspects. But when they start pinching drivers for other non-hit-and-run-related offences, the tide of support for Claude turns, leaving him outcast from the normally tight-knit big-rig community.

Things come to a head after Claude chases down a suspect who responds to the false allegations by beating the crap out of him. Battered and bruised, he heads home to focus on rebuilding his life.

The investigation dies down, but the death of Paul is never far from his mind. A tip-off from a guilt-ridden driver with the CB handle ‘Red Robin’ (Dwier Brown) gives him a fresh lead on a trucker of interest who goes by the handle ‘Python’.

As it turns out, Python is a woman who’s been terrifying drivers across California and Nevada. This gal packs a serious punch, and she doesn’t take kindly to Claude’s murder accusations. With Python gear-jammin’ her Kenworth and Claude in hot pursuit, they hit the highway to settle things once and for all.

VERDICT: 2/5

Also known by the more appropriate title Revenge on the Highway, Silent Thunder is supposedly based on a true story, but I get the impression that ‘loosely’ needs to be inserted here. It’s standard made-for-TV fare, but the truck action is decent, and explosives must have been on sale at the time of filming, because everything gets blown up! One eye-rolling foible during a car chase scene is when both drivers are able to ditch their trailers purely by dumping the tractor protection valve on their dashes.
