THE long-running Expression Session column in Street Machine produced hundreds of cool design concepts over the years, thanks to the talents of artists including Linda Vesperman, Jeff Haggarty and Ryan Carter. Most of the wilder designs were never built, although Haggarty’s Mod Rod Torana concept was finally brought to life at last year’s Meguiar’s MotorEx, thanks to South Australian car builder Chris Varney.
Now, another Expression Session masterpiece is set to become an actual running, driving street machine. For the past few years Canberra couple Adam and Kylie Perry, with the assistance of street machining legend Howard Astill, have been working on making Steve Vesperman’s original two-decade-old design concept a reality.
The car is dubbed Tailspin, and the challenge was to produce a back-to-front, two-door FB Holden. An R33 Nissan Skyline provided the roof, doors, pillars and plenum, while under the bonnet is an injected Holden V8. Unlike many dream/concept cars, this one will be fully engineered and road-legal. You’ll be able to see the finished product at this year’s MotorEx, which is on 16-17 July in Melbourne.
