IN THIS episode of Classic Car Hunter, Glenn ‘GT’ Torrens takes in the delights of the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival, thanks to Ryno Insurance.
Kurri Kurri is a small town of under 6000 people, located in the NSW Hunter Valley, about 150km north of Sydney. Coal mining was once the primary industry of the area, but these days more people are employed in the wine industry than anything else.
Motorsport-wise, Kurri has three claims to fame. Firstly, it is the birthplace of multiple World Supercross Champion, Chad Reed. Secondly, Kurri is home to the Loxford Park motorcycle speedway, and thirdly, it hosts the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival.
The event runs by the time-honoured formula established by Coolangatta’s Wintersun festival all those years ago – a big chrome bumper car show, pin-up parades and live music thanks to some killer rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll bands.
Part of what makes the Kurri event so popular is the luxurious layout of the town, with its massively wide main street divided by a long, shady park and topped by the magnificent Kurri Kurri Hotel. Kurri always attracts a really cool mix of cars, as you’ll see from GT’s video.
Next year’s event is being held March 23-25, so put it in your diary and check out the website for more info.
