The last-generation Chrysler SRT is the value buy for modern muscle

Modern Muscle Brings Hemi Power at VF SS pricing at the Motor Gallery

Prices of many late-model performance cars have dropped since the COVID boom a few years ago, however VF and VF2 HSVs, XR8 and XR8 Sprints, and 2014 FPV GT-F Falcons still bring solid collector car coin. However, there are still some options for a well-appointed, fast, late-model, low-mile, rear-drive V8 sedan for under $100-beans.

If one of the final Aussie-made muscle sedans are outside your budget, how about some American hardware? The Motor Gallery’s listing of this neat, low-kilometre 2017 Chrysler 300 SRT packs a heap of V8 muscle that should tickle the fancy of street machiners wanting a Mopar-flavoured daily, or a comfort-plus weekender.

Chrysler Australia sold the SRT-branded high-performance variant of the 300 large sedan in Australia from 2006-2022, initially with a 6.1-litre Gen3 Hemi that was upgraded to the burly 6.4-litre ‘392’ from mid-2012. Early cars were badged 300C SRT8, before Chrysler made the name simpler as part of a mid-cycle update in 2015.

This SRT has 470hp (350kW) worth of sauce on its pie, and 637Nm worth of twist in the crust, backed by an 8HP ZF auto. These 8HPs were a massive upgrade over the previous five-speed auto, and we’ve seen them handle four-digit power figures in drifting, drag ‘n’ drive and street combos today.

In almost 10 years since it left the dealer this 300 has racked up just shy of 60,000km, and was obviously a well-cared-for example as it looks pin-sharp in the photos on the website. This particular SRT is a Hyperblack edition, a cosmetics package available in MY16, ’17, and MY18, which included carbon-fibre interior trim, black forged alloy wheels and some blacked-out exterior trim.

The 300 was engineered during the ill-fated Damiler-Chrysler merger, and was originally based on the large Mercedes E-class platform. While it was unashamedly luxury-oriented, more like an HSV Senator or FPV GT-P than the more-basic Clubsport and GT, the SRT was no slouch; its 0-100km/h time was rated at just 4.4-seconds, and MOTOR knocked out a 12.6-second quarter-mile at Heathcote in the final edition SRT.

Yet the SRT is still stacked with luxury touches, including heated and air-cooled seats, panoramic glass sunroof, leather trim, premium Harmon Kardon sound system, and more. It also has plenty of go-fast goodies like Adaptive Damping suspension with multiple drive modes, Brembo brakes, and launch control! There was also a Core Edition available around 2013 which stripped out many of the luxuries and should provide a cheaper entry point to 6.4 Hemi 300s.

For around $60-grand this SRT is a great alternative to an FPV GT or HSV Senator, but is a very clean, low-mileage example of a big, burly modern Mopar muscle car. With a cat-back exhaust to let the 6.4 Hemi roar, it’d have all the attitude we’d need to make for a fun, comfortable daily driver!
