THE rebuild of the late Pat Fay’s iconic FJ Holden hearse is well underway at the Canberra Institute of Technology, and to help raise funds for the project, Peter Fitzpatrick and the Kings Car Club have organised a cruise, car show, open day and dyno demonstration on March 17th.

The day kicks off at 9:30am at Eagle Hawk Hotel, before a cruise to the CIT grounds for an informal car show, sausage sizzle and a behind-the-scenes look at the amazing CIT facility, where Farmtruck and Azn’s Skidtruck was pieced together. You’ll even get to see the multiple Horsepower Heroes-winning Torana of Jake Edwards on the dyno.

Naturally, Pat’s FJ will be front and centre, so you can check out progress on the restoration of this profoundly significant street machine, which is being undertaken by students and teachers at CIT. While the expense of the build is largely being met by sponsors, Fitzy tells us that the proceeds from the fundraiser will mostly go towards the huge amount of chrome plating required.

When the time comes, the iconic graphics will be faithfully reproduced by Wayne Harrison under the watchful eye of the original artist Frank Lee, who is now 84 years young – how cool is that?

“I took the project on because it the car was going to end up a junkpile and get wrecked; it’s a piece of history that needs to be preserved,” said Fitzy. “Pat’s wife Carol is really excited about the project and has agreed to hand the car over to a museum once it’s complete so it can be appreciated for generations to come. We’re aiming to debut it at Motorex.”
