Wherever we’ve journeyed over South East Queensland of late, we’ve bumped into the boys and girls of the Gold Coast-based Fossil Fuelers car club.
We first came across club president Adam Somerville at Rare Spares Rockynats #3. Adam was there in his HJ Holden sedan subbed FOSSIL1 and he was doing one hell of a job at both the show and the go.
One the show side, FOSSIL1 landed in the Top 20 and nabbed a runner up trophy for Top Paint. But that didn’t stop Adam from taping up the rear quarters and giving the HJ hell on the dragstrip and in burnout finals!
For this year’s Rockynats, Adam brought FOSSIL1 back for another trot in the drags and in the elite hall, as well as his HELMONT HT ute to do duty on the burnout pad.
No less than 11 other Fossil Fuelers joined Adam in Rockhampton, including club secretary Jamie Cramp and his stunning XW Falcon van on debut (look out for a full feature on this beauty in the September issue of SM).
Recently, Adam invited us to check out his rad garage for a Thursday night session with the crew to hang out and hear about the club’s history.
The Fossil Fuelers started off with a couple of old school mates catching up on Thursday nights for some car therapy, spanner work, beers, a feed and yarns galore.
Over the years a few more mates with cars started making the Thursday catch ups a regular part
of their lives, alternating around six of the founding member’s mancaves and helping on
each other’s rides. After only two years, they now have 35 members, despite being an invite-only deal.
“We all like cool cars,” says Adam. “The cars are mainly chrome bumper, but not exclusively. It’s not only about the car in our club, it’s about the person and being involved and interacting with the crew. Members are like family,” says Adam.
Visiting the Fuelers reminded me that how important having a network of like-minded people to meet with regularly is for mental health and an overall lifestyle. How good is our sport!
Since Rocky, we’ve seen the clan at both Cooly Rocks On and All Ford Day. They’ll be back in force for Rockynats #5, but in the meantime, you can keep up with their adventures on their Facebook page.
