WHILE blown big-blocks and screaming LS-based combinations are all the rage at the pointy end of the burnout scene, there are definitely other ways to skin the skid cat, as Harry Seaman’s VK Commodore demonstrates.

Like other giant-killing combinations such as Adam Slorach’s NUMNUTZ HR ute and Ben Falk’s SIXPOT HG, Harry’s car is powered by a blown Holden straight-six.

“We bought the car near Yass in January 2014 for $500,” says Harry, who hails from Wagga Wagga. “We had it up and running in time for Brashernats in June.”

Harry’s old man is a speedway guy, and had both the knowledge and the spares to help Harry come up with a reliable supercharged combo on a sensible budget. “We used a black motor out of a VK, as they have a better crank and rods than red motors and breathe a bit better,” Harry says.

“The crank and rods are stock, but we used good rod bolts and hypereutectic pistons. It has a custom cam, a heavily ported Yella Terra nine-port head and a few tricks in the oiling system. The blower is a Weiand 177 that we bought from Ben Falk and the Trimatic was done. Fuel is methanol.”

So how does it go? Pretty darn well. “It makes around 300hp,” Harry says. “We only take it to 6400rpm and it has hung in there. It is really on-song at the moment. We had a fire at this year’s Brashernats thanks to a spill from the catch can, but there wasn’t any real damage. Next up is Performance Car Mania at Winton.”
