Rod Wells’s LJ Torana coupe in the build

Unfinished project gets a new lease on life

After picking up a stalled restoration of a track-prepped LJ coupe just a few minutes from home, Rod Wells has wasted no time in getting on the tools to bring the car back to life. Here’s his brief story.

“I’ve been a Torana enthusiast ever since being driven to primary school in 1973 by my brother in his LC, and by the time I turned 18, I had my own LC GTR in white.

“Over the years, I’ve owned most of the Torana L series and even a UC, but the one that always stood out as the best to drive was the LJ coupe.

“In March 2024, I came across an LJ two-door that had been used as a track car and was equipped with all the right gear, and to my surprise, it was located just three minutes from my home. I went to have a look at it and knew straight away I had to have it.

“A resto on it had been started – it was already stripped back to bare metal – but since then it had been locked away in a shed for 15 years.

“I trucked it home and dove straight into a restoration, as I handle all the work on my cars. I wasted no time in contacting Rare Spares to order everything that was visually apparent the car would need.

“When it came to choosing the colour, I decided to break away from tradition. In the past, I had always played it safe with classic options like Maranello Red, but this time it will be painted a colour I’d considered many times previously: the simple Kermit Green.”
