Claye Williams’s home-built, LS1-powered LX hatch build has many handmade custom touches, including headers and full metalwork. It’s now sitting in bare metal form and ready for paint. Here’s his story.

“I got my LX Torana hatch in 2021, and what started as a rotisserie resto has blown out into a mad, pro tourer-style build.

“The goal is for it to be fully engineered and approved running an LS1 with a TR6060 six-speed manual and BorgWarner rear end with a Truetrac LSD and 3.9:1 gearing.

“It will also have a/c and a custom power steering set-up, along with a set of custom two-piece billet Hotwire wheels (18×8 on the front 18×11 under the back).

“I didn’t want to put any off-the-shelf headers on the car, so I fabricated and welded up a set of custom, 13/4in stainless-steel four-into-ones.

“I’ve done all the metalwork, rust repairs and mechanical work myself in my garage at home, and the Torana is currently in bare metal in readiness for paint.”
