Few would have expected a 19-year-old from a tiny town in Victoria to roll into Street Machine Summernats 36 with one of the coolest and most surprising Toranas at the event, but Nintingbool panel beater Seth Fuhrmeister clearly pays little mind to others’ expectations. For proof of that, look no further than his eyebrow-raising choice of powerplant for his LC: a 400rwhp turbo RB30. We had a chinwag with Seth to find out more about this Monaco Maroon Torry’s brutal blend of old-school muscle and new-age smarts. And now, Seth and the LC are in the running for Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse YSMOTY.

How did you come to own your LC?

I got it as a shell when I was about 14. It was sitting under a tree at some dude’s house who had listed it on eBay. My dad surprised me with it – I actually thought we were going to a doctor’s appointment; I’d left school early and wondered why we were taking a car trailer with us to an appointment halfway between Ballarat and Geelong! Dad offered the bloke six grand and away we went with the Torana.

What condition was it in?

The body was pretty solid; we just had to put a new floorpan in it and add a nosecone, ’cause the old one was full of bog. It was as simple as blending the paint in through the bonnet and the front guards to match the original patina.

Did you have to do much else to get her up and running?

It was equipped with a five-litre V8 when we bought it, half-done and not going. We were given a red motor with it, as well as an interior that wasn’t in the best nick, so we tracked down some new interior to put in it with the classic patina look in mind, so that it still looks like a factory car that hasn’t really been touched too much. We installed the Holden straight-six after pulling out the five-litre, but it didn’t last long before we decided to upgrade to the rebuilt RB30 we had lying around, with the added turbo, of course. That’s paired to a three-speed Jatco auto and a Volvo diff. We debuted her at Summernats last year and took her back for another go at this year’s event.

Sounds like you know your way around a rebuild; how long did it take?

A lot of people doubted us, and it took a lot of cold nights working in the shed by the heater, but Dad and I smashed it out in about eight months, getting it all done just in time for Summernats last year.

What sparked your interest in cars?

I’ve grown up with my dad owning old classics all my life. He still has his first car – an FC Holden that has a turbo RB30 as well. That’s what inspired the swap in my Torana. We’ve just had all sorts of cars over the years.

What’s in the stable right now?

We have about 14-15 cars at home – all different, but mostly Holden. I’ve got a VF SV6 as a daily, as well as a road bike, and Dad has a V2 Monaro and a 1954 Mercury and plans to do them up. We’ve also got a VF GTS Walkinshaw, a VF Redline wagon, and Mum has a VK Blue Meanie replica that’s in the process of being built. Just cars everywhere, really!

Any future plans for the Torana?

It’ll never be complete; it’s always gonna be a work in progress. Eventually, I’d like to tub it and get a billet-block RB30 to get a lot more power out of it, but I’m happy using her as a cruiser for now.
