ONE thing the modified car community has always been pretty handy at is pitching in to help those in need. The burnout community was rocked by the tragic passing of Nik ‘MELTEM’ Rigby recently, but no one was more affected than his family.
George Pihas of the Southwest Muscle Car Club had known Nik for around 10 years, and as an organiser of regular Greenway Muscle Cars & Bikes meets in Western Sydney, he saw an opportunity to raise some funds for the family to ease their financial burden and help them through a tough time.
The first event was postponed due to bad weather, but it certainly didn’t affect the turnout last Saturday night, because Greenway in Wetherill Park was overflowing with toughies. Everyone turned up eager to help, too; through raffles and auctions the event managed to raise a commendable $15,500 for the cause.
There were a heap of trophies on offer, and some top-shelf cars were lured out of hiding. Prizes and auction items included car-care packs, Summernats season passes, magazine subscriptions, framed MELTEM artwork, passenger rides in a number of big-name burnout cars, and vouchers for anything from tattoos to photoshoots and dinners.
“I just want to thank everybody for their support; it was an awesome turnout,” said George. “I knew it was going to be big event, and so many companies jumped on board to donate prizes and that really helped make it a success. We were blown away.”
