WHILE Adam Foreman’s HZ One Tonner looks clean enough to spend its days parked at car shows, the super-tidy two-door commercial packs a serious punch, with a twin-turbo 540ci big-block combo that has maxxed-out his local chassis dyno!
Running in Turbosmart Outlaw Blown class at Drag Challenge, Adam has just been cruising so far. “The big cubes just putt along on the highway,” he says. “We were getting hot inside the cabin driving up to Swan Hill from Calder yesterday, but the engine was cool and cruised easily.”
Based off a Dart block and head package, the 540ci combo uses a Callies crank, JE pistons and Oliver conrods, with a pair of BorgWarner S480 turbos pushing up to 20psi through the assembly on E85. Adam switches over to 98RON for street driving.
“We never got a number out of it as it maxxed the dyno out, so we just used it for checking air-fuel ratio,” he says. “I have a pair of LS1 PCMs that I switch at the track, plus we have a little tank for E85 behind the cab. I’ve now got HPTuners software so I won’t have to do that, but we were thrashing to get the new rear end in the car before Drag Challenge kicked off this year.”
That rear end is a fabricated nine-inch packing street-friendly 3.25 gears, sitting behind a TH400 three-speed auto and 10.5in Dominator converter.
“I’ve had the car since I was 17, and it actually started out as my dad’s work ute,” Adam explains. “It was a 253 on gas when I got it, then it got a 308, then a blown big-block, and now this turbo set-up. I want to see a high eight-second pass out of it, as I haven’t had a clean pass out of it since we’ve had this combo running.”
