The inaugural Boogaloo Invitational was held at Castlemaine over the weekend, and man – what a blast! The brainchild of Des Russell and Tesha Mahoney, the Boogaloo harks back to the early years of Chopped, before the driving events sent that show rocketing into another stratosphere.

Like Chopped, the Boogaloo is an event for pre-1965 traditional-style rods and customs, as well as pre ’75 US and British bikes. The event was located in a recreation reserve in the middle of Australia’s hot rod capital – Castlemaine, Victoria. Des and his crew organised camping, a well-priced bar, some great tucker, some select vendors and a movie night.

Each club in attendance was provided and awarded their own trophy and that was about it for the official proceedings. Cars and bikes came from as far away as Perth, with a small contingent of international visitors as well. The show was packed out and despite a lashing from the weather on Saturday night, was deemed by all we spoke with to be an unqualified success. We’ll be back next year!
