World Time Attack Challenge at Sydney Motorsport Park has grown from obscurity into one of the premier Aussie motorsport events on the calendar.
Held in early spring each year, WTAC transforms SMP into a car-crazed festival. A-grade drivers and machines travel from around the world for the two days of action, headlined by the wild, production car-based rides that’re all chasing the one perfect lap during the time trial sessions.
While they’re the heroes of the show, it isn’t just about grippy circuit action. Drifting is in full swing as well, with the premier battles taking place under lights on Saturday night, and there’s also a mega show ’n’ shine and traders galore.
Our pick from the whole show is the Flying 500 roll racing up the front straight of SMP, which went down to the wire last year between a twin-turbo Lambo and an R32 GT-R.
Now, fans can relive the 2023 event thanks to One Perfect Lap, a new two-part documentary mini-series on YouTube. Alongside plenty of on-track action, the doco features interviews with the lead drivers, team owners, commentary team and event organiser Ian Baker as they recap what was an epic edition of WTAC.
You can watch part one of the doco below; it serves as a great warm-up for the 2024 World Time Attack Challenge, which takes place at SMP on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 August.
