THIS year’s Meguiar’s MotorEx was a lot more than a static car show; while there were all the usual show cars on display there was also drift demos, burnout car start-ups and driving, an Isuzu four-wheel drive demo and the MPW Mainline dyno. Setup between the drift track and the trade hall, the dyno was a constant hive of activity with plenty of tough cars rolling up for a go.

Australian dyno company Mainline supplied a 2000hp rated hub dyno for the event and it was run by Adam Rogash and the guys from Melbourne’s MPW Performance. The hub dyno has a number of benefits over a regular rolling road-style dyno, number one being there is absolutely zero slip so there’s no wheel spin messing with power figures.

Quentin Feast – our three time Street Machine Drag Challenge winner – was keen to make use of the no-cost dyno session as his seven-second Torana had previously only been on a rolling road dyno and last time it spun up over 1300hp before blowing a truck tyre to pieces and damaging a rear quarter.

Quentin’s car runs a 404ci iron-block LS with twin Garrett GTW3884 turbos on modified VE Commodore exhaust manifolds. It also runs a factory plastic intake manifold despite pushing 26psi and well over 1000hp. Thus far it has clocked a 7.75-second quarter-mile at 175mph which was run in the lead up to Quentin’s Drag Challenge 2017 victory.

On 26psi the Torrie made a pretty incredible 1406rwhp on the Mainline hub dyno. Quentin reckons that’s a fair chunk less power than it took to run his PB so there’s plenty more left in the tank to go even quicker.
