American muscle ‘aint dead! The C8 ZR1 Chevrolet Corvette had our jaws on the floor when it was revealed back in July. Fitted with a much-revised version of the Z06’s 5.5-litre V8. Now dubbed the LT7 with a pair of 76mm turbochargers swinging off the side, the ZR1 was trumpeted as making a claimed 1064hp and 828lb-ft. And a dizzying 346km/h top speed.
Now Chevrolet has revealed their claim of what a ZR1 will do down an unprepped quarter mile: 9.6-seconds at impressive 150mph, for those running the optional ZTK Performance Package. Zero to 60mph is achieved in just 2.3 seconds. Without the ZTK bits, the Chev says the ZR1 will run 9.7 seconds, but with a little extra terminal speed of 152mph. All of these figures were done on pump fuel and running sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cut 2R rubber.
In comparison, the screaming, normally aspirated Z06 will run the quarter in 10.6-secs and hit 60mph in 2.6-secs. The all-wheel-drive, hybrid E-Ray version is a little quicker, doing the do in 10.5 and 2.4-secs respectively.
Of all which makes the ZR1 the quickest and fastest Corvette ever. And quicker than the mighty Dodge Demon 170 on an unprepped surface.
What’s the ZTK Performance Package, you ask? It is primarily aero kit, adding a super-aggressive rear wing, a tall Gurney lip and front dive planes. All of which are made from woven carbon fibre to keep the kilos down. And underneath, there underbody strakes to provide even more downforce.
While there is no info on how much downforce all this creates but a similar kit on the previous model ZR1 made 950lb of downforce at that car’s top speed. Aside from the body kit, the ZTK Package adds stiffer springs and those sticky Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres.
Of course, either way you order your ZR1, circuit track time is why you buy this car, not drag racing. Of course, if drag racing mid-engine exotics is your thing, the aftermarket already has your back, as demonstrated by this eight-second example back in January.
