One of our favourite country drag strips is about to cop a big dose of excitement, with the announcement that Mildura’s Sunset Strip will be hosting round two of the Australian Top Fuel Championship, 12-13 March.

The fuel cars have been added to the program for the track’s annual Ken Scroop Memorial meeting, which will also include Top Bike, Pro Stock and Supercharged Outlaws.

The meeting will be the highest profile event at the eighth-mile track since the halcyon days of the Slamfest series that shook regional tracks around the country a decade or so ago.

The prospect of a full six-car Top Fuel field has Sunraysia Drag Racing Asscoiation boss Kingsley Kuchel pumped: “The last time we had Top Fuel at Mildura was an exhibition deal with the Lamattinas in 2014. And we had a round of the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny cars in 2015.

“Phil Lamattina ran a 3.29-second pass at 263mph here in 2014, so will be interesting to see how they go.

“This will be the first time an Australian championship round is being held on the eighth-mile.”
