Who would’ve thought even five years ago we’d be able to say 10 – yes, 10 – cars had run over 1000hp in the Haltech Horsepower Heroes? This year just that has happened in the MPW Performance dyno cell, and it’s not even the finals yet.
The top three qualifiers in the big dog Boosted V8 class all cracked well into the four digits, Lee Povey’s JKLHYD VL Calais leading the way with a staunching qualifying run of 2011hp from the twin turbo LS combo.
Trailing him is Ayvon McLeod’s XFZILLA, the still-fresh twin turbo Godzilla machine laying out 1702hp.
Third place is occupied by our own Scotty Taylor and the Grimace VS ute, knocking out a fresh power PB of 1346hp! He also drove the thing all the way up from Melbourne for ‘Nats, so it’s an awesome effort to book a spot in the final tomorrow.
While it’s two V8s that lead the way at the end of the last day of qualifying, that wasn’t the case going into the day. Two turbo Barra machines were in charge of both overall and the Forced Induction Six Cylinder class.
Bilal Hamoud’s FG G6E Turbo lead the charge with a 1620hp run, and Lachlan Gow’s FG XR6 Turbo cranked out 1340hp. Bilal’s 1620hp run was chucked out at 36psi, but the highest boost of the day was actually recorded by EJ Chrisanthou’s FG XR6 Turbo. The de-stroked 3.8-litre Barra made 1457hp, but one a whopping 46psi!
Other sky high numbers we’ve seen so far was when Edin Dervisevic’s stonking 632ci big-block HK Monaro broke the aspirated V8 record by a fair margin, boasting 1098hp unassisted to the new record in Haltech Horsepower Heroes.
Adam Mitchell’s 540ci ‘64 Compact Fairlane occupies second spot in class with 718hp, while third placed qualifier in the aspo V8 ranks is Josh Smith’s VH Commodore. It ran a screaming Dodge R6 Nascar motor that turned to 9300rpm on its peak 683hp.
That 9300rpm run from the VH held the berries for the Highest RPM award qualifier, until right at the end of the afternoon Ibrahim Barikhan’s 13B-powered Mazda RX-3 rained down in people’s ear drums in the MPW Dyno Cell at 10,000rpm.
For the Aspirated Six Cylinder Class, Wes Goodwin’s AU Falcon leads the way with a 239hp run. Second is another Falcon with Ron Gow’s EF at 205hp, and round out the potential podium Dean Grima’s Aussie six-powered VK Commodore with a 162hp run.
The Corish boys made 450rwhp in their epic, twin-turbo Barra-powered John Goss Special.
The finals for all those mentioned above kick off back in the MPW Dyno Cell from 9am tomorrow morning, when we’ll crown the Street Machine Summernats 37 Haltech Horsepower Hero.
