Holden made one hell of a splash when they unveiled the VY generation of the Commodore in 2002 in Hot House Green, a colour that was instantly recognisable on the road and replicated on many earlier model Commodore and car builds in the era.

Time and Australian UV hasn’t been overly kind to what was once one of Australia’s most-loved hues, so it’s become increasingly rare to find a VY in Hot House Green that still has any resemblance of colour or more importantly, clear coat.
Fortunately, this 2003 HSV VY Maloo currently offered for sale by The Motor Gallery in Melbourne suffers no such paint issues, even with a smidge over 200,000km on its ticker. That’s good news for us though, because without super low collector mileage, it means it’s a schmick ute you won’t be afraid to actually get out and cruise.

Being a HSV-fettled Maloo, it started life with the 285kW HSV-tuned version of the iconic 5.7-litre LS1. It’d likely be making a fair bit more than that though, this Maloo now operating with an aftermarket camshaft, an over-the-radiator intake, and a full stainless exhaust system with extractors to dispel the vapourised dinosaur juices. It’s bloody glorious, with a soundtrack and lump worthy of the out-there, HSV bodykit.
Finishing off the exterior is a set of GTS-spec 19in HSV wheels, and inside, a fully renovated interior with diamond stitch and the very much sought after and loved HSV Coulson front bucket seats.

With the early 2000s coming back into vogue in a big way, collector car buying trends are following suit. Sadly, 2003 wasn’t 10 years ago anymore, and those rose tinted glasses now have their sights firmly set on early to mid 2000s Aussie metal. So if you want one, now is probably the time to snap one up, especially given how hard it is to find them in this kind of condition 23 years later.
