Street Machine’s guide to the car events happening around Australia this weekend

WITH the split between Australian National Drag Racing Association’s (ANDRA) and the Thunder 400 group of tracks, the finals for this year’s ANDRA Championships will not be held at Willowbank’s Winternationals. Instead, the finals take this weekend at Adelaide International Raceway. There are over 260 entries, with Darren Morgan and Wayne Newby doing demo runs in Top Fuel and John Zappia leading a six car Top Doorslammer field. Those two headlining classes, along with Top Fuel Motorcycle, Top Alcohol and Supercharged Outlaws will run over 1000ft, with the rest of the field running the full quarter mile. LC Torana Coupe Mark HayesThis weekend the Australian Pro Street Association (APSA) circus heads to Sydney Dragway on Saturday for a day crazy, wheels-up drag racing action. The entry list is full of awesome cars, including Paul Mouhayet’s Outlaw Extreme Mustang, Mark Hayes’s beautiful LC Torana running in 10.5 Outlaw and Joe Gauchi’s all-conquering Cortina, returning to race Outlaw Radial after a long hiatus. The action runs all day and it’ll cost adults $30 to spectate, kids 12-15 years $15 and under twelves get in for free.

Ford GT40 Gulf Le MansThe Factory Performance Machines (FPM) Motor Expo is on at the Melbourne Exhibition building in Carlton this weekend, where more than 180 high performance cars, bikes and boats will be on display. Highlights include the Bathurst 12 Hour Nissan R35 Nismo GTR, Doc Brown’s Back To The Future DeLorean, a 1987 Brock Commodore VL Director, a freshly-restored Max Stewart Formula 5000 which won the Melbourne Grand Prix in 1973, and a bunch of other tough new and old race cars, bikes and Jet Spring Boats. It’s shaping up to be an awesome show and ticket prices range from $15 to $35 depending on whether you check it out on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Ford Falcon Wagon CustomCars n Coffee Melbourne is also on this Saturday morning at the Road Track Rally skid pan in Truganina, Victoria. The day is a static car show which anyone can enter by giving a $5 donation which will go to charity. The action kicks off at 8am and there will be food, drinks and a jumping castle for the kids.

Michael Schumacher Cobra Replica OnroadThe Cobra Car Club is holding its Shelby Festival at Winton Raceway this weekend as Shelby Cobras and Mustangs hit the track. Saturday will be all about racing around the circuit, while Sunday’s fun will take place on the Motorkhana pad.

VH Commodore Drag RaceThis Sunday Heathcote Raceway will be open for a test n tune session open to all cars and bikes. It’ll cost you $60 to race or $20 to spectate for the day. Gates open at 8:30am, with racing commencing at 11am through to 4pm.

VK Commodore Drag RaceIn Queensland, Willowbank Raceway is holding a test n tune session this Saturday night. It costs $45 to race, $20 to be a passenger and $20 to spectate. Gates open at 4pm and racing kicks off at 4:30pm and runs ‘til late.

Chevy Camaro Pro TouringIn Perth, the Camaro Cruise is on this Sunday. The group will be meeting at 9am at Car Park 308, Challenger Parade, City Beach and leaving for the Ravenswood Hotel at 10am. The event is open to all Camaros new and old.

Historic Drag RacingThis Sunday, drag racers will converge on the original site of the old Surfers Paradise International Raceway to celebrate 50 years since it opened. Of course, the drag strip and race circuit no longer exists, having been flattened for housing development back in 1987. The 50-year celebration will include a nostalgic display of old-school dragsters and memorabilia at the Lakeside Drive Parklands in Carrara, close to the startline of the old drag strip.
