The second Hardass 1000 drag-and-drive event for 2024 has been run and won, with Jamie Watson’s green HQ coming out on top.
The last two days of the event were full of fun and games, including a Harry Haig dress-up day that culminated in late-night mohawk cuts, a wedding, emergency Hemi-six engine swaps in the pits, and burnouts galore.
Congrats to Drag Challenge regulars Matt Murphy and Shannon Curtis, who got married at the Broadford Hotel on day two, after discovering that the Hardass timeslip master was also a licensed marriage celebrant. It was a big day for the pair, with their big block-powered Chev giving them a small fire to deal with. The weekend was topped off with a win in the Big Pimpin’ class over Corty Haig.

On day five at HPR, South Aussie John Ellis blew the 265 Hemi in his Charger in the burnout box and didn’t cross the beams. Fellow competitor Luke Yarwood had done his run in his Val ute and had the security of knowing he had a new built engine ready to go at home. And Luke had trailered the car. John, on the other hand, had driven the Charger across from Adelaide….so Luke’s 215 was swapped into the Charger so John could complete the event and drive home! Awesome stuff.
