GREG HOGAN

1969 CHEVROLET CAMARO

DECEMBER 2015

GREG Hogan wanted a tough streeter he could belt around a race track with impunity, then drive home in comfort. His exacting nature, attention to detail and hands-on approach have resulted in a pro touring-style Camaro that eats miles, takes corners, shames Porsches and looks as tough as it sounds.

Greg stripped a tired ’69 Camaro to the bones; firewall, rear quarters and even the roof were binned in favour of new metal. He started the job himself, eventually tasking Rowe & Sons to complete the project, including exchanging the front quarters for aftermarket aluminium items.

For the suspension, Greg turned to Art Morrison Enterprises, who supplied a front subframe that includes C6 Corvette gear, a race-spec steering rack and mounts for a dry-sumped LS7. They also supplied the ‘five-bar’ rear suspension based on Greg’s own design; it converts to both four-link and three-link depending on the required application.

Greg’s Camaro has a thousand little details; the more you look at it the more you find, but the big-ticket item is the RHS 440ci LS7. Built by US NASCAR engine builder Dave Crume, the aftermarket block was fitted with Wiseco ceramic pistons, Carrillo rods and a Manley Ultra Light crank. Mast Motorsport Black Label heads top the decks, while the OZMO Engineering intake manifold, resplendent with Red Bull proprietary carbonfibre, ensures a businesslike finish.

Eight-hundred horses on the dyno running through a Rockland T56 Tranzilla gearbox is stout power for any car, let alone a naturally aspirated LS!

When you’ve got a combination this hot, you need a killer cooling system; aside from the PRC aluminium radiator, the Camaro runs a cooler for oil, gearbox, diff, power steer, and even Greg himself by way of integrated air conditioning, ensuring the only crisis to befall this car is on the number plate.
