THE end is now in sight for most of the Hot Rod Drag Week competitors as day four wraps up after an intense day of competition at Bristol Dragway’s Thunder Valley in the green hills of Tennessee. Nestled into a narrow valley Bristol Dragway is probably the most picturesque drag strip we’ve ever seen. However the increased elevation and high ambient temps conspired to keep the racer’s guessing with many running their worst times of Drag Week 2018. The high temperatures meant the track was pretty slippery and thin air put the entrants down on horsepower.

At the pointy end of the field the battle is between three different cars. Tom Bailey and his twin turbo ’69 Camaro, Bryant Goldstone is his twin turbo Javelin and Dave Schroeder with the nitrous Corvette. Yesterday Bailey had a handy lead over Goldstone, with Schroeder very close behind. However Steve Morris slipped a new piston into Bailey’s Camaro last night and it only managed a 7.46 today after running sixes at every other track. This has allowed Goldstone to close up the gap to just one tenth of a second and Schroeder is only four-hundredths further back. This means we’ll head in to the last day with one of the tightest margins across the top three ever.
