One of the stars of the show at this year’s Motorvation was undoubtedly Boris Pacey’s Sandman-themed HQ Doorslammer ute. taking out People’s Choice, Top Engineered and Top Competition.

What was originally meant to be a burnout car has evolved into a cutting edge race car that is not only of show quality, but has been built to take on the best-of-the-best in Top Doorslammer

Starting with a one-tonner, Boris moved to a ute and ended up creating his own fiberglass body and building a chrome moly chassis to suit.

“The build has taken 15 years,” says Boris. “For most of that time, it has been me and some mates doing a few hours every Wednesday night. Then we set a goal to finish the car for Motorvation and it was flat out for the last few months.” You can check out some of the in-the-build action here.

The ute is powered by a Brad Anderson Hemi, backed by a B&J auto trans and 12-inch diff.

“One of my goals is to make it essentially a car that myself and my wife can run at the track by ourselves, so low maintenance was a theme and hence, no clutch,” says Boris.

Next steps? Build a carbon fibre version of the body to keep the weight down and build a bus to transport the car across the country for NDRC racing action. Stay tune for more on this one!
