WE love a good sleeper here at Street Machine; in fact, we have a whole section in our magazine dedicated to them. Jamie Spiller’s Sigma wagon is a perfect example of how to do a sleeper right, and for the second year in a row he’ll be bringing it along to our Drag Challenge Weekend rodeo in Queensland.

Jamie’s owned the wagon since he was in high school, and his original reasoning behind the LS swap is not what most would expect. “I mainly did the swap in the beginning to make it a reliable daily driver, and the LS was an easy choice and something different to all the XR6 Turbos and SS Commodores you see getting around,” he says.

Under the bonnet is a 5.7L LS1, now with CNC heads, a FAST intake with a bigger throttlebody, and the usual cam, springs and so on. Using a tuned version of the factory LS1 ECU, the donk throws out 400rwhp – more than enough for a daily driver. Up behind the mill is a freshly rebuilt 4L60E and 4000rpm stall converter from RVO Automatics, while the rear end is from a HiLux with 3.7:1 gears.

Jamie will again be in the K&N Dial Your Own class at DCW this year, hoping to improve on his previous PB of 12.2 @115mph. “The car hasn’t been to the drags since Drag Challenge Weekend last year, and with the old ’box and converter the 60ft was pretty average,” he says.

With the new driveline refreshed for this year, Jamie’s hoping for an 11-second pass, but his main goal is to enjoy the weekend as much as he did last time. “I was blown away with the road trip, and the car performed awesome all weekend,” he says. “It was so refreshing to drive into a drag strip and there’s no egos at play, just people enjoying each other’s company and having fun regardless of how fast or expensive their car is.”
