PROJECT VL – TOUGHENING UP THE BORGWARNER DIFF – EPISODE ONE

In episode one of Project VL we're toughening up the rear end and fitting new wheels down at Geelong Differentials

IN our first instalment of Aiden’s Project VL build series we’re down at Geelong Differentials. The 25-spline factory single-spinner diff wasn’t going to cut it for racing, so we’re giving the BorgWarner a spruce up. We actually filmed this video almost a year ago when I first got the car; at the time my plan was to do a stock bottom end turbo setup on my RB30 – nothing crazy, so rather than go nine-inch we stuck with the Borgy.

Because I planned on fitting a stronger Skyline five-speed manual, we also decided that a limited slip centre was going to best suit my needs. If you’ve been playing along, you’ll know that plans have dramatically changed since then, and we’re now doing a built engine thanks to the guys at Powerhouse Engines, teamed with an auto ‘box from ProMatic.

Still, with the 31-spline axles we put in my rear end last year at Geelong Diffs, this setup will happily handle north of 600rwhp, so it’s definitely still tough enough for the job. We also retained the factory 3:45 diff gears, which we may upgrade once I get racing. We’ll see how we go.

Check out the video for the low down on how we spruced up by BorgWarner diff and shortened it up to suit a set of 15×8.5 deep dish Convo Pro wheels. Yes it’s possible to fit them under a factory wheel tub!
