Aussie NHRA Top Fuel star returns to race on Aussie soil

FROM humble beginnings punting an FC Holden wagon at Adelaide International Raceway to winning the 60th NHRA Nationals in his Rookie year, Richie Crampton has enjoyed a storied drag racing career, and it’s far from over.

Richie CramptonRichie’s gig wrenching for Graeme Cowin in Sydney is what first led him Stateside, and after getting a start on the tools with Morgan Lucas Racing, he bided his time until he was offered a seat in Top Fuel.

Richie Crampton build for drag weekWhen Morgan Lucas closed their racing operations in 2016, Richie stayed on building race cars, and currently has an interesting passion project on the go – a crazy ’57 Chevy wagon in which he plans to contest Hot Rod Drag Week later this year.

Richie CramptonBut Richie has always harboured a desire to pilot a Fuel car on Aussie soil, so when good friend Phil Lamattina offered him a steer of the Fuchs Lubricants car at the Nitro Thunder event at Sydney Dragway, he jumped at it.

We took the opportunity to corner Richie for a chat about his illustrious career, his kick-arse Chevy build, and how he’s enjoying his time Down Under.
