FOR most, their exposure to drifting starts and ends with the Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift movie, but it’s actually grown to become a legitimate competitive motorsport in Australia with some pretty decent sponsorship. The majority drive use 90s Jap cars with some old-school Corollas and late-model Commodores thrown in. James Mackie is a bit different; he built a drift car out of an XY Falcon!
But wait, there’s more; powering this XY Falcon is a faithful old LS1 from the General. Ford fans will probably call this sacrilege but hey, if you want cheap horsepower it’s hard to argue with an LS. A lot of the Jap cars in the drift scene have even had their boosted four and six-pot motors replaced with a GM V8s!
James’s setup is a relatively simple one, he’s been drifting with bone-stock LS engines for the last few years but he has recently stepped up to a Harrop 2300 under-bonnet blower, strapped to an cammed near-standard 5.7-litre. On a conservative 6lb of boost she made 458rwhp and according to James it’ll now fry tyres even in fourth gear!
The rest of the setup includes a T56 Magnum six-speed manual gearbox, XF Falcon front end with coilovers and a steering kit for extra lock, a hydraulic handbrake for mad skids and a tricked up 31-spline Borg Warner rear end. He’s been toying with the idea of switching to IRS, possibly with an R33 Skyline or 350Z rear end.
James has been drifting the XY for the past three years and just had the Allan Moffatt-inspired livery applied a couple of rounds ago.
