CARNAGE: PROJECT MX5.7

Mazda MX5 v8 swap LS1 build 3 nw

We’re building a 1000hp twin-turbo LS1 Mazda MX-5 for Red CentreNATS.

ONE of our favourite events on the calendar is the Red CentreNATS, held each September in Alice Springs. Part of what makes it awesome is that wild, unregistered race cars and toughies can cruise on the streets! So we decided to build a car just for the event; namely a cute little Mazda MX-5 – stuffed with a 1000hp, twin-turbo LS1 powerplant.

PROJECT MUSTANG

Street Machine Project Mustang

Sidchrome and Team 18 build a pro touring-style 1969 Mach 1 Mustang.

FOR 2017, Sidchrome has turned its attention to a ’69 Mach 1 Mustang, and joined forces with Charlie Schwerkolt’s Team 18 Supercars crew to manage the build from start to finish. Built in a pro touring style, the Mustang will feature RRS suspension, massive Harrop Engineering brakes and Speedline rims, along with a more-traditional 351 Windsor, FMX and Ford nine-inch driveline.

PROJECT VL

Street Machine Project VL

Aiden builds a street and strip VL Commodore, powered by a 600hp RB30.

THE youngest member of the Street Machine team has caught the drag racing bug and is bolting together a tough VL Commodore to race at Drag Challenge 2016. It is his first-ever project, so come along for the ride as Aiden learns about the highs and lows of this crazy hobby. What was intended to be a budget build has – somewhat predictably – blown out into something altogether more complex.

CARNAGE: TURBO TAXI

Street Machine Carnage Turbo Taxi

Did someone hail a taxi? We’re cranking some boost into a high-mileage clunker.

OUR plan was to take a worn-out FG Ford Falcon cab with over 500,000km on the speedo and transform it into a turbocharged monster, capable of running 10-second quarter-mile times on LPG fuel. And while we haven’t quite got there yet, the taxi will be firing on all six for Street Machine Drag Challenge 2017.

PROJECT COBRA

Street Machine Project Cobra

Sidchrome and Python Vehicles Australia cooked up a Coyote-powered AC Cobra.

WE HAVE been involved in a lot of project car builds over the years, but the Sidchrome Cobra was the first one we’ve done that has started completely from scratch! Beginning with a bare chassis and a bunch of body panels, the Python Vehicles Australia crew cooked up a killer Cobra that combined old-school style with a brand new Coyote V8.

PROJECT TORANA

Street Machine Project Torana

We built a Holden LX Torana hatch and just gave it away!

OUR LX Torana hatch project was built with Unique Cars taking the lead in the build, resulting in a bright orange beast, powered by a 355ci Holden/TH350/nine-inch driveline. You can find the details of the build on the Unique Cars website, though we do cover some nifty bits here, including the cool rocker covers made by Lowe Fabrications.

PROJECT KOMBI

Street Machine Project Kombi

Sidchrome team up with TAFE kids to build a killer Volkswagen Kombi.

WE HAVE always had a soft spot for the classic Vee Dubs, so we had a lot of fun working with the kids from Chisholm Institute and the gurus at the Australian VW Performance Centre on the build of the Sidchrome Kombi. Epic rust repairs, new paint, wild trim and a stomping 140hp engine upgrade made for a challenging build that resulted in a very cool bus.

PROJECT SWINGER

Street Machine Project Swinger

We build a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger with a 500hp, 408ci small-block Chrysler.

IN 2014, we transformed a mild 318-powered Dodge Dart into a street-and-strip terror. Mods include a 408ci Chrysler small-block making over 500hp and 500lb-ft, backed by a Paul Rogers 727 Torqueflite, 3500rpm converter and a McDonald Bros nine-inch diff. Other goodies included an upgrade to front disc brakes and some crafty mods to fit a set of 255 radials out back.

CARNAGE

Street Machine Carnage

Welcome to our Carnage video series, where we have fun building crazy project cars!

LED by Street Machine Deputy Editor Scott Taylor, Carnage is building, racing and cruising project cars! We’re always on a budget and pressed for time, so that keeps things interesting – and means there is no need to manufacture the drama you might associate with other shows. Carnage is about keeping it real, warts and all!
